One question I get asked frequently is, “What are my odds of winning?” In Canada, the odds of winning are usually stated in the rules as follows: The odds of winning will depend on the number of eligible entries received. That doesn’t tell the entrant very much. If the marketers did a great job of promoting the contest there could be ten of thousands, or even hundreds of thousands of entries, decreasing your odds of winning. If the marketers did a poor job, there may only be hundreds of entries, increasing your odds of winning.
Jeff Rosenthal, a professor in the Department of Statistics at the University of Toronto wrote Struck by Lighting-The Curious World of Probabilities. It examines the role randomness plays in our everyday lives. According to Jeff, you have a better chance of being struck by lightning than you do winning the lottery.
I say, “Half the hobby is in your head.” I prefer to follow Joe Dispenza’s teachings. He teaches in Evolve Your Brain, that your thoughts create your world, your Universe, around you. Every morning he creates his day.
(NOTE: Watch all three parts.)
So what do you think your odds of winning are?
Remember, Henry Ford said, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right.” Think you can win and you will be right, no matter what the odds.
One wonderful thing about having contest buddies, is they send you interesting things they come across. My friend Janet sent me 13 Ways to Improve Your Luck. It’s a short slide show style article highlighting many of the points I believe in.
Point 4 is Expect The Best. Change it to Expect To Win. I expect to win 5-15+ prizes every month and I have done so since 2004 (with the exception of last December when I was so sick my focus shifted to my health).
Check out the other points. What are you not doing that you could do to improve your luck? Increase your wins?
I have gotten into the habit of watching clever commercials and then checking out the URL posted at the end of the ad, because there usually is a promotion involved.
Tonight we were having ice cream for dessert and watching Fraggle Rock, (Hey, the Queen leads a very exciting life!) and a commercial for Cadbury Creme Eggs came on. It was so funny I thought, “There must be a contest on that website.”
Well, it turns out there isn’t, but I was laughing so hard trying to save the egg I decided to share the link; Release The Goo.
And who knows, maybe a contest will soon appear on the site…
I found this really fun website called The Luck Guide: the online resource for getting lucky. Deborah Aaronson and Kevin Kwan even wrote a book: Luck: The Essential Guide.
The Niagara Gazette wrote an article about me for their new regional magazine Common Sense. (I’ll post a link to the PDF as soon as I get it scanned.) Michelle, the journalist, also wanted a local angle so I setup a sweepstakers meeting. It was held yesterday on from 2-4pm at the Orange Cat Coffee Co. in Lewiston NY.
18 people RSVP’d and 10 made it to the meeting. We had 4 new sweepers, 4 Lucky Lilacs and 2 Canadians! What fun we had!
First we all patronized the Orange Cat. Upon a recommendation, I had their Chai Latte. YUMMY!
We began by introduced ourselves. Spoke a bit about what attracted us to the hobby, what we had won, etc. I then gave a brief overview of the hobby for the new sweepers. Finally we had prize draws. (It wouldn’t be a sweepstakes meeting without prizes!)
Michelle even attended as she is writing another sweepstakes article. This one will be about the meeting itself. (I will also post the link to the PDF once it is published.)
There is nothing more energizing than being with other like minded people. Find a local club in your area or start one today!
