We chose to drive north and visit the Cascade Caverns, which boasts having Texas’ only 100′ waterfall. But, when we got to the end of the cavern, the waterfall wasn’t working. Hmmm….

After stopping in Boerne for lunch at Bumdoodlers, we headed west to the Enchanted Spring Ranch.

It’s a replica of an old west town. It has been used for countless movies, weddings, etc. They have daily ranch tours and we got to see the current reigning World Champion Gun Twirler, Pistol Packin’ Paula. What a great show she put on for us!

After another great dinner beside The Riverwalk, we spent the rest of the evening catching up with fellow sweepers in the lobby as conventioneers had trickled in over the course of the day. Our fun-filled weekend started early!

The first thing we did this morning was go shopping! I love a store called Anthropolgie which is only located in certain US cities, so whenever I am travelling near one I make a point of stopping by.

Then we began our trek up the Mission Trail. We began at Mission Espanda, stopped at Mission San Jose and then ran out of time for the day. We plan to visit the most famous stop on the Mission Trail, The Alamo on Thursday.

After being in the heat for most of the day, we returned to the hotel for a dip in the pool followed by an authentic Mexican dinner at Casa Rio on San Antonio’s famous Riverwalk.

Wow, you’re having a contest. Good for you.

Oh, and you’re having a contest with the lowest odds of winning in Canadian contesting history – you should be really proud. The rest of us are alarmed, if not disappointed, that you thought no one was going to notice how likely it was that your company would be keeping the $250,000 grand prize in your back pocket while countess uninformed Canadians gulped down soda pop 21 ounces at a time.

Even though the odds are one in five billion that you care about my opinion, I thought I’d improve my chances by writing you this letter.

It turns out that the letters I’ve been collecting by purchasing your overpriced beverages can also help me spell some words that I can use to describe how I really feel about your Play Subway Scrabble contest.

A Canadian Consumer

Let me take two steps back. As you may know, not only am I the Contest Queen, but for the past 20+ years I have also been a professional marketer. About a month ago I was contacted by Alphacritters. They had been successfully selling their name pictures for the past 10 years at festivals and fairs. The business was run by a mother-daughter team, Linda and Karen. All the “critters” had been created by Karen, who sadly passed away last year. (For the full story behind the company, please visit their website.) Linda promised to keep Karen’s legacy going. My job was to help Linda grow the business and keep her promise. The next logical step was to take the product to the retail market place. So we created a wholesale marketing plan and Linda rented booth space at Canada’s largest retail industry trade show.

Now one step back. Several weekends ago we attended the wedding of very close friends of ours up in Collingwood ON. At the Sunday brunch, one of the guests was wearing the most interesting flip flops. They were covered in little blue balls looking like sea foam and tucked in the “foam” were little fish and starfish. All the women were commenting on them. (Men don’t really care about such things!)

Back to the CGTA. While on a break, walking through the show looking for anything lucky I could add to my online store or sell on a convention vendor table, what should I see but the Canadian distributor for Hot Flops!

Not only did the have the oceanic flip flops, but they had all sorts of fun styles. The closest thing they had to lucky, was poker. I don’t think they fall into the lucky category, but they sure are fun!

So, what do you think? Should I carry them?

WOW! If you only read one contesting book, this should be it!  On the surface, Helene’s book is about her contesting journey, but it is far more than a contesting book. It’s a book about how to use the power of your mind to have anything you wish in this life. I can’t even begin to touch the depth of the wisdom she bestows upon the reader in this review.

Helene has a fantastic imagination and gift with words. She loves playing with words to get her point across. To get anything you wish for in life, Helene sugests you use the SPEC method:

Viral marketing is the high tech version of word-of-mouth marketing and marketers love it because their product’s or service’s message can go further and faster than it ever has in the past.  I agree.  Viral marketing is a great tool, but the secret is all in the execution.

I think every promotion should have a viral marketing component to it, such as giving every entrant an extra entry for each friend they refer.  I am not fond of contests you can only win by getting the most votes, sending the most emails or getting the most friends to text in for them.  It’s the person that can cast the widest net that usually wins versus a random draw (even playing field) or the best entry (such as in a photo contest).

So, being the Contest Queen, and having heaps of contesting buddies, should I cast my wide net?  I have to admit, I am torn.  The part of me that loves winning says YES.  The part of me that loves my friends says NO, it’s just not fair.  And then again, someone has to win, so why not me? Why not you?

How do you feel about casting a wide net?  Do you feel that you could ever win a popularity contest?

You have to be here to win, especially big. Let me explain. We live in a world of duality: on/off, up/down, happy/sad, win/lose, etc. I have a tendency to live in the future. What do I mean by that? Well, I am a planner. I like to plan my day, my week, my life because it gives me the illusion of control. (If you like to control your life and circumstances, I have bad news for you, you are not really in control. None of us are.) While I am busy planning, I am in the future at the meetings, events and trips. (This is different than visualization where you feel as if you are driving the new car now.) I found out if you are anywhere other than here, you are no where.

If you are no where, instead of now here (the duality), the Law of Attraction will not work. The three steps are: Ask, Believe and Receive. If you are no where, then it’s like placing and order, moving and not telling anyone. The order arrives, finds no one home and returns it undeliverable. The items gets put back in the warehouse and is delivered to the next person that places the order.

So, for the next little while I am not focusing on prizes or wins. I am focusing on being here. I am here, now. I am present, now. (It will be interesting to see if any of the orders I placed with the Universe in the past show up since I am now “at home”.)

I highly recommend listening the the four part webcast about Jill Bolte Taylor’s life changing experience and how she learned to live in the now.

In 2003, after seeing several people chat about the book in an online contesting group I decided would like to give it a read. I remember walking around the house, with a duster or vacuum in one hand and the book in the other as I could not put it down. (I also highly recommend having a tissue box nearby.)

Apparently, someone in Hollywood was also inspired and in 2005, Julianne Moore stared in the movie of the same name. As soon as the movie came out on DVD I bought it. I was watching the extras and saw that Dortha Schaefer was still alive, living in Payne OH, and writing for The Paulding Country Progress. I wrote her at the paper, and she me wrote back!

I eventually met Dortha, the remaining Affidaisy members and even became an honorary Affadaisy for a day. I was also lucky enough to interview all of them for my book. (The Winning EDGE Vol 3 Issue 5 and The Affadaisies.) Sadly, both Evelyn, the book’s heroine, and the author have both passed away and I did not meet either of them.

This is not your regular book review. I am not going to give anything away as I want you to run to your local bookstore or library and get it. And, only after have you read the book do I want you to see the movie.

I hope you enjoy the book and movie as much as I do.
