If you’ve been entering sweepstakes as a hobby for any length of time, you’ve probably noticed a big shift happening right now.
For years, PIN code promotions were everywhere. I used to head out early in the morning looking for discarded caps, labels, boxes, and specially marked products. Some of my biggest wins came from PIN code giveaways, including a trip for four to Universal Studios and even a hot tub from a Canada Dry promotion.
But over the past few years, those opportunities have been slowly disappearing. Today, more and more brands are moving to receipt-based sweepstakes instead.
PRODUCTS IN YOUR PANTRY
The first thing to understand is that receipt contests require a different mindset. Instead of hunting for codes, you’re looking for products you already buy and matching your purchases to active promotions. Before you buy anything, always read the rules. Make sure the product qualifies, check the eligible sizes, and confirm exactly how many entries are allowed.
BUYING VS NO PURCHASE NECESSARY
The second key is to compare the cost of purchasing a product with that of using the no-purchase entry option. Sometimes buying the product is actually cheaper than mailing away for an entry. For example, if a chocolate bar costs less than a stamp, buying it may make more sense, especially if it’s something you already enjoy.
Organization becomes even more important with receipt promotions. Keep your receipts. Photograph them carefully. Save them until the promotion ends, and any prizes have been awarded. If a sponsor asks for proof of purchase, you’ll be glad you kept the original receipt.
Another tip is to use your everyday shopping strategically. If your household already buys yogurt, soft drinks, snacks, or other participating products, simply choose the brand running a promotion. You’re purchasing items you need anyway while gaining entries into a giveaway.
ALWAYS READ THE RULES
Finally, don’t assume every receipt promotion is obvious. Some retailers run contests directly on the receipt. That’s why it’s worth taking a quick look at every receipt before putting it away. You never know when an extra giveaway opportunity might be hiding in plain sight.
While I miss the excitement of PIN code hunting, sweepstakes have always evolved. The people who win consistently are the ones who adapt. Today, that means learning how to make receipt-based promotions work for you.
The good news? The same principle still applies: you can’t win if you don’t enter.
